SSJ Sister Karen Klimczak Center for Nonviolence

The SSJ Sister Karen Klimczak Center for Nonviolence works to carry on Sister Karen’s vision of and commitment to a world without violence.

Sister Karen Klimczak founded HOPE House on Sycamore Street in the City of Buffalo in 1985 to provide transitional housing to inmates being released from correctional facilities. In 1989 she moved the ministry to the former rectory of St. Bartholomew Church on Grider Street. Sr. Karen renamed the ministry Bissonette House in honor of Rev. Joseph A. Bissonette, a strong proponent of nonviolence who was murdered at that rectory in 1987.

On Good Friday, April 14, 2006, Sister Karen Klimczak herself was murdered in the Bissonette House at the hands of one of the resident parolees.

Located at 80 Durham Avenue in Buffalo, NY, the Center offers educational programs for schools, prisons, and community organizations to help people resolve conflict in nonviolent ways.

The present director is Vivian R. Waltz.
