St. Joseph ’s Day in March is a feast day commemorating the life of St. Joseph. The table is created as an offering of thanks for prayers answered.
During a famine in Sicily, when food was scarce and many people were starving, the poor people had only their faith to rely on. St. Joseph was known as the protector of the Holy Family and Italians had strong family relationships, so they prayed for St. Joseph to intercede for them so they could have successful crops. They promised to honor St. Joseph perpetually if God would send rain. The rain fell, the land turned green, and food was once again abundant. From that day on they kept their promise by honoring St.Joseph on his feast day and by helping the needy in their community. In gratitude, people promised to make annual offerings of their most precious possession – food – in St. Joseph's honor.
St. Joseph Table was held Sunday March 14, 2010 at Our Lady of Peace Church in Clarence, NY. Over 600 attended and $5,000 was given to three Food Pantries;
Clarence Presbyterian Church, St. Aloysius Gonzaga Parish, Cheektowaga and
St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, South Buffalo.
