St. Joseph ’s Day in March is a feast day commemorating the life of St. Joseph. The table is created as an offering of thanks for prayers answered.
During a famine in Sicily, when food was scarce and many people were starving, the poor people had only their faith to rely on. St. Joseph was known as the protector of the Holy Family and Italians had strong family relationships, so they prayed for St. Joseph to intercede for them so they could have successful crops. They promised to honor St. Joseph perpetually if God would send rain. The rain fell, the land turned green, and food was once again abundant. From that day on they kept their promise by honoring St.Joseph on his feast day and by helping the needy in their community. In gratitude, people promised to make annual offerings of their most precious possession – food – in St. Joseph's honor.
The Sisters of St. Joseph of Buffalo participate in this tradition. We hosted our fourteenth St. Joseph Day Table on March 9, 2008 at Our Lady of Peace Church, Clarence. Because of the generosity of our sponsors, and neary 400 people who attended, we were able to share $4000 with the Catholic Charities sponsored Lackawanna/South Buffalo Food Pantry and the Clarence First Presbyterian Church Food Pantry.
